Harness Racing For Children
Kidz Kartz was first established in Kumeu in 2003. There are now Kidz Kartz programmes running in Pukekohe, Cambridge, Christchurch and Southland.
Pony racing is very popular in Australia, America and Europe and we thought it was about time Kiwi kids got in on the action.
Even though it is fun for both kids and ponies it helps to develop a well rounded horse-person who is capable of driving safely and tactfully on the trotting track, and the knowledge to care for horse and pony.

Our Club training is on Sunday's and we had a good muster today. The weather was kind to us, a little wind and the showers came after we had finished for the day.
Our ponies were groomed, geared up with their harness and carts attached then driven for a few rounds of the trotting track. As the weeks pass we exercise the ponies for longer sessions as they build up their fitness
We also had some young children arrive and the were treated to a drive in a double cart.

The end of the 2011/2012 season for our Kumeu Kidz Kartz was held at the Kumeu Trotting track on Sunday 29th April. Also taking part was some visitors from the Counties Club.
Contestants including ponies were dressed in purple which we called Purple Day, the idea was see what the drivers could do in purple. At our club day the Sunday before children drew a pony so the they had all week to sort out how they could dress themselves and their ponies in the purple theme.
We started with a parade at 10am and our judges were Sue and Chelsea Thorowgood the Saddlery Warehouse who were overwhelmed with the creative and competitive their creations were.
There ponies and drivers wearing wigs, cowboys, fairies, one dressed as a Zorro, there was purple glitter, purple painted hooves, purple ribbons and purple clothes, what a great parade and a lot of fun was had by all.
The eventual winner was Jamie Harrison as Zorro driving Delightful Eddie (Kumeu) second went to Caitlin driving Boris (Counties) and third place went to Linda Pringle driving Ruff Rufus (Kumeu)
